MOLDOVA/TRANSDNIESTER: Christmas Demolition Threat for Baptist Church Not Yet Carried Out.

Philip Walters, Keston News Service, 27 December 2001

Pastor Vasili Timoshchuk, pastor of the Tiraspol Baptist Church, told Keston News Service today (27 Dec) that the authorities have not yet carried out their threat to demolish the church by 25 December. About a fortnight ago the church sent an appeal to the government, and has so far received no reply.

The Baptist congregation in the town of Tiraspol, capital of the breakaway region of Transdniester, was told that the authorities would demolish its prayer house if it did not transfer it to residential use or pull it down by 25 December. The State Building Inspectorate warning, issued on 8 November 2001, followed increasing pressure on the church. Local officials have insisted to Keston that the church was "illegally built" and that they were not targeting the building because it is used for worship. (See KNS 22 November and 4 December 2001). Keston continues to monitor developments. (END).
